What to do?

Do you have something paranormal going on in your home?  Perhaps you are contacting us for help, but what can you do in the meantime?  There are a few practical things you can do to put your mind at ease.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Stand your ground

First and foremost, own your space.  This is your home or your work place.... do not allow something or someone or something to push you around in an area that is your domain.  You are spirit and body, so you must believe that you are more powerful than something that is spirit only.  Nothing has the right to push you around in your own home.  Ignore small annoying paranormal things, but if something is really bothering you or a family member, you have the right to demand that it stops.  Tell the entity to stop or leave… those are the only two acceptable choices to give it.

Do you have a religious belief?  Do you believe in a higher power, divine spirit, god, an energy that surrounds us all, the sun in the solar system, or anything greater than ourselves?  Draw on that power and gain strength from that and believe that you have the power to tell something that it can't push you or your family around in your space.

SMUDGING
Some words of caution:  dried white sage burns very hot, and the embers stay hot for a long time.  Always smudge in a little metal container, an abalone shell, or some type of ceramic or ironstone dish, making sure that it is thick enough or insulated so you aren’t burned by holding the container (you can use an old skillet, or a skillet lined with foil).  You can put some clean sand or dirt in the bottom as an insulator if you want to, and NEVER use glass.  When you're finished with the smudging material, you can cover it with sand and leave it in the container you were using.  When you want to use the bundle again, just shake the sand off.

When you light the sage, let it flame and burn, then blow the flame out.  It's the smoke you want....not the fire.

To cleanse and bless your house or apartment, start by your open front door.  Go to the front door of the house, and help the smoke drift around each room, focusing on doorways, windows, corners, closets, sink and shower drains, and anything that could be considered an opening to the outside of the house.  Work from the front door in a counter-clockwise direction around the house, saying a simple blessing in each room or space, something like “My house is clean, my house is blessed”.  Go into every room, including bathrooms, closets, cabinets, utility rooms, kitchen...everywhere.  When you get back to the front door, say "Anything not here for the highest and best good of those who live here, be gone.  You are not wanted, and you are not welcome. This home has been cleansed and blessed." You can say some of these things as you go through the house, or a favorite prayer if you have one, or whatever comes to mind as appropriate to say. (Note: moving counter-clockwise through the home focuses on pushing out or banishing the negativity, and moving clockwise helps to bring in the light and positive energy... some people choose to smudge the entire house first counter-clockwise to get rid of negativity, and then smudge again clockwise to draw in positive energy.... It's totally up to you.)

Then walk out the door, close it, and smudge around the door and door frame.  Leave the remaining smudging materials outside to burn itself out.   Make sure you put it on dirt, or on something that will not burn.
Repeat, as needed, to maintain positive energy in your household.
Notes about smudging materials:
Sage is the mildest item to smudge with.  The next “step up” would be dried sweet grass, which is also mild.  If you really feel you need something stronger, you can go with a combination of frankincense and myrrh.  And the strongest (& smelliest) is Dragon’s Blood.

Frankincense, myrrh, and Dragon’s Blood all come in two forms: incense sticks, or resin (looks like little rocks).  You can use either, but please note that if you use resin, although the effect is strong, it burns VERY hot, the process is a little more complicated because of the material, and you would also have to purchase incense charcoal starters (they look like tiny charcoal discs).  You would place the charcoal disc, curved side down, in a heat-proof container (if nothing else comes to mind, line an inexpensive sauté pan with a few layers of foil, and hold the pan by the handle because the bottom of the pan will get very hot).  You will place some of the resin pebbles on top of the disc and light the charcoal starter. It will have a small spark, and then you will be ready to use it.  Follow the same procedure as above for the sage.  If you use the incense sticks, you just have to hold the stick over something that will catch the ash that falls, and the occasional live spark that might fall.  Again, follow the same smudging procedures.

You can purchase any of these items at a new age-type store like Everlasting Gifts in Roseville on Douglas Blvd., or Planet Earth Rising in Folsom on Sutter St.  There are also many online retailers you can find by a simple internet search.
