API members: Dave, Shara, and Sabrina
API conducted a second follow-up investigation of Karen’s house on Saturday, September 20, 2003, from
approximately 11:00 pm to 2:30 am. Karen, her daughter, and her gentleman friend, and her two dogs were also present in
body. API members were aware of the presence of four spirits: a middle-aged woman in the kitchen, a middle-aged man in
the front room, a teenage boy in a white tee-shirt and blue jeans in the hallway, and a little girl five or six years old in Karen’
s daughter’s bedroom, the back-right bedroom. Cameras were set up at the far left corner of the master bedroom, facing
Karen’s bed, and in the hallway approximately 15 feet from the bathroom, facing the bathroom. An EMF reader was
placed at the foot of Karen’s bed. A motion detector was placed at the center of Karen’s bed.
The lights in the hallway and Karen’s daughter’s bedroom were kept off from the beginning. For most of the rest of the
night, lights in Karen’s bedroom were also kept off. The oven light in the kitchen and candles in the fireplace in the family
room stayed lit for most of the night, however. Protocol on this evening differed slightly from previous investigations in
this regard only.
To start the investigation, Dave and Shara snapped Polaroids down the hallway and into Karen’s daughter’s bedroom.
Meanwhile, Karen narrated the story of one of her spirit guides to Sabrina in the master bedroom. David and Shara
attempted to ‘play’ with the little girl’s spirit by opening Karen’s daughter’s bedroom door, and asking the spirit to run into
Karen’s bedroom. Proof of the little girl’s presence in Karen’s bedroom was signified if the motion detector in the master
bedroom went off after David and Shara opened Karen’s daughter’s bedroom door. The little girl’s spirit had ‘played’
with them in this fashion during previous investigations.
Sabrina kept watch in Karen’s bedroom during the first portion of David and Shara’s experiment with the little girl’s
spirit. Sabrina reported the strong feeling of presence’s in Karen’s bedroom, though not necessarily the little girl’s
specific presence. Sabrina attempted to clear channels for communication with the entities in Karen’s bedroom and
received a number of vague communications, such as the image of an old Spanish-style mission, the image of a nun, the
image of a saint, and the words, “She is an angel to us.” An API member reported seeing a couple of orbs fly through the
room from the direction of the master bedroom closet (directly across from Karen’s daughter’s bedroom, separated by a
wall and the hallway). For the remainder of the evening, investigators took turn sitting in the master bedroom, and opening
and closing Karen’s daughter’s bedroom door.
Sabrina spoke with Karen about her relationship to the spirits in her house. Karen welcomed them, she said they all had
a hand in protecting her space from intruders. Case and point, once when Karen went out of town she had one of her
neighbors stop by to feed her dogs and bring in her mail, etc. Karen said that neighbor felt immediately upon entering the
house that she wasn’t welcome there at all, and refused after that first time to ever go back. The neighbor’s husband, who
is decidedly less sensitive than his wife, did the job for her until Karen returned. Karen remembered apologizing to her
sensitive neighbor, “I’m sorry I forgot to tell them about you, no wonder you felt so unwelcome.” The spirits were simply
doing their job to protect Karen’s space. Had Karen mentioned to them that her neighbor would be dropping by
periodically during her absence, they wouldn’t have given her neighbor such a hard time.
Karen went on to describe the way she communicates with the spirits. She said that she would occasionally pick up a
word or two from them, but that for the most part, in addition to seeing them, she feels what they are feeling, or sees
pictures from the spirit’s life that help her pinpoint why they haven’t moved on. Karen also mentioned that she performs
the majority of her spiritual practices in her bedroom, which is probably why the energy in the bedroom is so noticeably
intense.
The Polaroids and video footage revealed some orbs.
In conclusion, it is unclear as to whether the investigation shed any new light on the spirits in residence. What is clear is
Karen’s willingness to work with the group as it refines its methods towards capturing (quantifying and qualifying)
paranormal phenomena. It should be noted that the energy in Karen’s house, while intense to the point of causing the air
to feel tangible at times, is very definitely benign. API would like to express appreciation to Karen, Karen’s family, and
her spirits, for opening their space for this type of experimentation.
