2003 California Ghost Hunters Conference San Francisco, CA Friday May 2, 2003 through Sunday May 4, 2003
API Participants: David, An API Member
Organized by the Ghost Trackers group out of San Jose, CA, the California Ghost Hunters Conference began with an informal cocktail hour and kicked off with a walking tour of the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco with tour guide Jim Fassbinder. The tour of haunted San Francisco began in the Queen Anne Hotel where the conference was taking place with stories of the kindly headmistress of the school which resided in the building around the turn of the century. The tour led throughout the immediate area, visiting the homes of several spirits, including Mary Ellen Pleasant, also known as the Voodoo Queen of San Francisco.
The following morning participants listened to presentations given by Lisa and Tom Butler of the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomenon and Janice Oberding, author of Haunted Nevada, and many other books and articles. After the morning break, Dave presented to the conference participants rituals of cleansing and blessing. Following lunch Laurie Jacobson, historian and author of Hollywood Haunted, spoke of the haunted legends of Hollywood.
Saturday evening was spent on a night tour of Alcatraz Island, including a special walking tour of restricted areas. Please see separate write up on the Alcatraz tour.
Upon return to the hotel from the tour of Alcatraz, participants had the evening free to enjoy San Francisco. Dave joined up with members of the AGHOST group from Seattle, WA for dinner at a nearby pizza place. Proving that even ghost hunters can have some fun, the two groups shared an evening of fun and entertainment, including some time spent in the hotel’ s haunted room. A late night (3:00am) tour of the hotel included watching an elevator ascend to the third floor, though the doors never opened and no one got in or out. At roughly the same time, another conference participant said she woke in her room on the third floor to see an adult-sized apparition by her bed.
Sunday morning all participants shared contact information and said their goodbyes. The conference proved to be both educational and fun for speakers and participants alike.
As a part of the 2003 California Ghost Hunter's Conference, participants attended a special tour of Alcatraz Island. The tour included areas of the prison not included in the regular audio tour. Participants visited areas including the de-lousing chamber, the hospital ward, the shower rooms, and the morgue, led by rangers who have experienced unexplainable phenomena while working in the prison.
Upon entering the hospital wing, several participants reported different phenomena, including cold spots and head pressure. In the lock-up area of the medical wing, the API member began to communicate with an entity at the entrance to one of the cells. The member experienced feelings of great fear being communicated by the entity. Following communication with this entity, an API member experienced pain and bruising in her right forearm, which continued for several days afterward. Other rooms where tour participants reported unusual sensations included the dental suite and the medical shower areas. One participant reported the feeling of being pushed upon entering the powder keg room off the main chamber in the morgue, though no other person was near him.
The rangers told stories of running footsteps where no rangers or tourists could be observed, and seeing people who vanished into thin air upon closer inspection. The tour concluded following the ranger's stories and all participants returned to San Francisco.
